Patsy Joyce has given Ireland a positive start to Sunday with a unanimous victory over Jaeyong Shin of South Korea at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool.
It was relatively comfortable for the Mullingar man (29-26, 28-27, 28-27, 29-26, 29-26), who will next face Bulgaria’s Javier Ibanez, with both fighters receiving point deductions during the bout.
The last-16 bout was set up after Ibanez saw off the USA’s Orlando Zamora-Garcia on points (28-28, 30-26, 30-26, 29-27, 30-26).
Three more Irish boxers are in action later on today with Michaela Walsh, Lisa O’Rourke and Dean Clancy due in the ring after 6pm.
Yesterday, O’Rourke’s sister Aoife powered into to the quarter-finals on an otherwise difficult day for the Irish.
