A staple of Limerick city’s food scene has served its final customers today.
Canteen on Catherine Street officially closed its doors after 14 years in business.
The popular neighbourhood café announced on Saturday that it was ending trade due to ongoing economic pressures facing small businesses.
Owner Paul Williams cited static sales alongside ever-rising operational costs as the core reasons behind the decision, noting that he did not see these fundamental challenges improving over the next five to seven years.
Williams reflected on social media the journey since opening in 2012, emphasising that the closure marks the end of a proud chapter rather than a sad defeat.
Over the past decade and a half, the Catherine Street spot built a strong reputation for championing local Irish food producers and fostering a loyal community of patrons.
“Starting in 2012, people came in as strangers, quickly became regulars, and now many are very good friends,” Williams said. He expressed deep gratitude to his staff, local suppliers, and the city community for their support over the last 14 years, promising to share memories of the café’s journey in the coming weeks.
Canteen’s departure highlights the continued squeeze on independent hospitality venues across Limerick city centre, where rising overheads continue to test small business owners.
