Ireland South MEP calls for terms Good Friday Agreement to be respected

An Ireland South MEP has said the terms of the Good Friday Agreement need to be respected.

MEP Billy Kelleher made the call after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently said that a referendum on a united Ireland “is off the table”.

The Fianna Fáil MEP said that the Good Friday Agreement is explicitly clear, and that the British Government cannot rule out the issue going to the polls.

He said, according to the agreement, a referendum must be held if it appears that a majority in Northern Ireland want to join a united Ireland.

MEP Kelleher said that the relationship between the Irish and British Governments is strong, but added that Prime Minister Burnham’s recent comments were not acceptable.
