Emmerdale has revealed Carl’s heartbreaking reaction to dad Jimmy King’s death in the show’s latest episode. Jimmy tragically lost his life in scenes last week amid Dawn Fletcher and Joe Tate’s disastrous wedding day, with the character dying in a car crash after he ploughed into the marquee.
In tonight’s (1 September) episode, multiple characters grieve in the aftermath of the events, with Jimmy’s wife Nicola notably worrying over Carl’s insistence on going to school after the loss of his dad.

“It’s the first day, if I don’t go, I won’t know where anything is, I won’t know anyone,” he declares, as his mum decides not to push it, before Carl brushes off her offer to drive him and rushes off.
Speaking later to Laurel, Nicola laments the fact that Carl is avoiding her, though Laurel suggests he is looking for some “normality” amid his grief. As she compares her loss to the passing of her own husband Ashley a few years ago, Nicola lashes out, before apologising and breaking down in Laurel’s arms.
Opening up about her own experience, Laurel says “grief grows with you” and that she will look back one day and smile over Jimmy. She also promises to be there for Nicola like she was for her after Ashley’s death.
Nicola then gets a text from Carl asking her to pick him up from school early, and she later asks what’s going on in his mind. Carl then admits he worries that if he causes her trouble she may not want him anymore given he is not her biological son.

Shocked, Nicola reassuringly tells him through tears: “I will always worry about you, and you will always be my son,” before they emotionally hug.
In the aftermath of Jimmy’s death, Nicola actor Nicola Wheeler recently teased to Digital Spy that secrets about her late on-screen husband will come out.
“Oh, Jimmy had a lot of secrets!” she noted. “I think the audience are going to be mighty surprised at the life Jimmy was leading, which nobody knew about. That’s exciting and surprising.
“It’s also unsettling because it’s totally against his personality. It’s totally against type. You would never imagine that Jimmy would behave like this…”
