Runner-up over 7f here to a rival who has since been group-placed, CITY OF GOLD appears to be the Ballydoyle first-string, so is chosen to score, with blinkers on instead of cheekpieces. He looks to have most to fear from his stablemate Noble Exhibit, who ran a fine race on debut at the Curragh.
Very open. On recent form, Lady Arwen, Java Wood and Eddie G have obvious claims, but it may pay to side with LORD MASSUSUS, who has done most of his racing at a much higher level than this. Clear Quartz is noteworthy for a good record at this venue. Never Loose is relatively unexposed.
An open race, and a chance is taken on NAZARIO getting off the mark, stepping back up in trip today. The handicap debutants Suir Monad and Purely have to be considered, while Tharaka and Shay’s Dream are likely better than they showed last time. Felix Somary, Down The Glen and Cladach can run well.
The key formline looks to be the Naas maiden in which Lunar Empress finished just in front of Autumn Gray and CHURCHILL BOND. However, the latter pair endured traffic problems on that occasion and can reverse the form, with preference for the last-named, who is nicely drawn today.
Suited by soft ground, MERISI DIAMOND can improve enough from his Roscommon run last time back from a break to take this. San Aer is a dual course winner who twice ran well at the festival here this year and looks the main danger. Racing Royalty has twice been placed over C&D so is third choice.
Joseph O’Brien has several strong contenders in a seven-runner squad, with the penalised Beset holding much the same chance in theory as Snapretend. However, Aidan O’Brien may have the solution with the relatively unexposed course winner CLASSIEST who should improve from last month’s return. Others to consider are Nuit, who gained an overdue maiden win last time, and the lightly-raced Chasing Paradise.
An improved display over a shorter trip here at the festival gives BELLE NUIT good prospects of a breakthrough win. There is plenty of stamina on her dam’s side, and she is slightly preferred to Party Dress, who stays further than this. Sylkie is noteworthy as a three-time course winner. Shambata is a lightly-raced filly who may improve. Canon Law could go well despite being 4lb wrong.
Paddy Twomey’s runner PORTERS CORNER can go one better than when losing narrowly in a C&D maiden at the festival. Pleased, who was a long way below her best in that race, rates a threat on the balance of form, along with I Hope You Dance. The Galway Hurdle runner-up Thisistheway looks capable of holding her own against younger rivals.
