Waterford teenager David Gaffney has made history, becoming the first Irish rider ever to medal in a road race at the European Championships in France on Friday, 3rd October 2025.
The junior men’s race in France covered 103.4km, with Gaffney taking bronze behind Germany’s Karl Herzog, who won the race, and Italy’s Robert Capello in second place.
Herzog crossed the line 13 seconds ahead of Capello, while Gaffney finished 43 seconds behind the winner, but crucially 13 seconds clear of a chasing group of seven.
Gaffney had been part of a decisive 12-man move with just over 30km to go and rode strongly all the way to the line, claiming the biggest result of his young career.
After his silver medal in the junior time trial earlier this week, Conor Murphy finished 48th in the road race at 6:59, Matthew Walls was 68th at 10:44, and Toby Sweetman, Hugh Óg Mulhearne, and Rory Condon were unable to finish.
