Sharlene Mawdsley was unable to replicate her summer form as she failed to qualify for the women’s 400m final on the opening night of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
The inaugural biennial invitational – organised by World Athletics where the world’s top athletes will compete for a prize pot of $10m (€8.67m) – is being held in the Hungarian capital, but Mawdsley was well adrift of the PB (50.06) she posted at the Paris Diamond League in June.
A hamstring tear ruled her out of the European Championships and in just her second race in seven weeks, the Tipperary woman ran 51.28.
That was only good enough for seventh – Olympic and World champion Marileidy Paulino was first across the line 49.58 – and 14th of the 16 athletes across both semi-finals and prize money of $4,000 (€3,450).
The final takes place on Saturday with the winner set to take home $150,000 (€129,300).
