EVENT: FÉILE JOHN FORD
Actor Aidan Quinn and singer Eleanor Shanley will attend the official opening of Féile John Ford in An Spidéal, Co Galway, on Friday 11 September. The festival returns for a second year, celebrating director John Ford’s family connections to Cois Fharraige (he was born John Martin O’Feeney in Portland, Maine, to Galway parents) and his enduring relationship with the west of Ireland. Running until Sunday 13 September, the programme includes screenings of Ford classics The Quiet Man, The Informer, The Plough and the Stars and My Darling Clementine. Events also include Morgan C. THEATRE: A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN
Over the course of one day and night in 1920s rural Connecticut, Josie Hogan, the last of her immigrant Irish family left at home with her father, and their anguished landlord, James Tyrone, long for escape – she from her life, and he from his loss… The sequel to Long Day’s Journey into Night and the last of a trio of largely autobiographical plays which reflect the author’s complex relationship with Ireland, Druid Theatre Company stage Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece at Galway’s Town Hall Theatre from 14 to 26 September, before the production transfers to the Gaiety Theatre for this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival. Directed by Garry Hynes, with a cast that includes Eileen Walsh, Lorcan Cranitch, Rory Nolan, Marty Rea and Cathal Ryan. Eileen Walsh talks to RTÉ Arena below:

EVENT: CLIFDEN ARTS FESTIVAL
The Clifden Arts Festival returns to Connemara from 17 to 27 September for its 49th edition – this year’s bash is themed OPEN, celebrating openness in all its forms, and includes music, literature, visual arts, theatre, film and talks. Set against one of Connemara’s most spectacular natural backdrops, a major new outdoor production, Women of the Waves by LUXE Landscape Theatre, will be staged on Omey Island, while The Stunning, Eddi Reader and Lúnasa shore up the music programme.The festival will also feature the world premiere of a multimedia work inspired by NASA’s Voyager Golden Record; other events include exhibitions, literary discussions, guided tours, school programmes and a new public artwork by mural artist James Kirwan – find out more here.

FILM: EVERYBODY DIGS BLL EVANS
Everybody Digs Bill Evans, a new biographical drama about the celebrated American jazz pianist and composer, will be released in cinemas across Ireland and the UK on 11 September. The film follows Evans after the death of his musical collaborator, bassist Scott LaFaro, and his journey to overcome grief and return to music. Norwegian actor Anders Danielsen Lie stars as Evans, alongside Bill Pullman and Laurie Metcalf and Irish actors Barry Ward and Valene Kane. Directed by Grant Gee, who won the Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, and filmed in Cork, the script comes from the incomparable Mark O’Halloran, who talks to RTÉ Arena below:

EVENT: SENSINEMA
This inspired new initiative will bring accessible outdoor cinema to two Dublin parks this September, with screenings of two acclaimed Irish animated films from Cartoon Saloon. Song of the Sea will be shown at Herbert Park on Saturday 12 September, followed by The Secret of Kells at St Anne’s Park on Saturday 26 September. The initiative, developed by Happenings and Neuroconvergence, is designed to make the outdoor cinema experience more welcoming and accessible to a wider audience by combining the atmosphere of cinema under the open sky with thoughtful features that allow people and families to enjoy the event in the way that works best for them – find out more here.
