The camera is the biggest change
For years, Samsung’s Ultra flagships included two dedicated telephoto cameras. Earlier, it used to be a 10x lens paired with a 3x one. Starting with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung replaced the 10x unit with a 5x one. The Galaxy S26 Ultra carries that formula, featuring a 10MP 3x optical zoom alongside a 50MP 5x.
However, Samsung may be gearing up for another major shakeup next year. Rumors suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra could drop the 3x lens altogether. And while early reports pointed to a sole 5x zoom camera, newer ones suggest the company could introduce a fresh 4x super telephoto camera.

Galaxy S27 Ultra could introduce a new 4x zoom camera
On paper, that reads like a downgrade: a 4x camera replacing a 3x+5x combo. However, it is worth being careful here, because a single better sensor can beat two weaker ones across most of the range people actually shoot at. Those who regularly use long-range zoom (5x and beyond) may not like the idea, but Samsung made it clear that people usually shoot at 5x or lower zoom when it traded a 10x lens for a 5x one on the S24 Ultra a few years ago.
Before that, Samsung was called the king of long-range zoom. However, the company is no longer chasing that title. Instead, its goal is to deliver the optimal experience to the vast majority of users, even if that means pissing off a certain section of its user base (Samsung did that earlier too, removing Bluetooth features from the S Pen, apparently because only 1% of Ultra users actually used those features).
The camera housing gets a big makeover too
The Galaxy S27 Ultra may not just introduce a new zoom camera, but the entire camera housing may get a new look. After introducing a vertical camera bump this year, Samsung is seemingly opting for a rectangular slab next year, a design popularized by recent iPhones. No, we aren’t saying Samsung is copying Apple (the change may have to do something with internals too), but the comparison is inevitable.
Speaking of internals, rumors suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra is getting a bigger battery. Moreover, a rectangular camera slab leaves sufficient room for attaching magnetic accessories to the phone. The current design doesn’t allow most accessories to attach properly.
Apart from a redesigned rear camera layout, the S27 Ultra may look identical to its predecessor in every other way. Expect slightly rounded corners with flatter edges, near-8mm thickness, and a similar overall size. Despite that, we may see a massive jump in the battery capacity, thanks to the silicon-carbon battery technology (more on this later).
Design sketches and leaked cases indicate the Galaxy S27 Pro shares the rear look with the Ultra, which would make the slab the visual signature of the premium half of the S27 lineup. The Galaxy S27 and S27+, meanwhile, may stick to the existing camera layout with a vertical bump.
Variable aperture looks unlikely
Despite some early rumors, the Galaxy S27 Ultra may not offer variable aperture. The device could once again come with a fixed aperture, probably f/1.4 like the S26 Ultra.
It would be a missed opportunity for Samsung, though. Apple is offering a variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. And not just two levels like on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 years ago (f/1.5 and f/2.4). The new iPhones allow users to manually switch between four aperture settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0.
This not only offers a more flexible system for shooting in various lighting conditions, but multiple aperture options also help reproduce depth more naturally and effectively. Hopefully, Samsung will consider the technology for the Galaxy S28 Ultra.
A smarter new selfie camera
Samsung is expected to equip the Galaxy S27 Ultra with a new 16MP selfie camera, replacing the older 12MP sensor. Alongside this hardware upgrade, Samsung could also introduce a smarter feature that makes the front camera more useful in everyday situations.
The said feature allows users to switch between a regular selfie view and a wider, landscape-style frame without physically rotating the phone. The higher-resolution sensor and software processing can crop and reframe the image while keeping the quality intact. This makes the front camera more flexible, whether you’re taking a group selfie, making a video call, recording a video, or simply want a wider frame while holding the phone vertically.
Finally, a bigger battery
For seven generations in a row, Samsung’s Ultra flagships have had a 5,000mAh battery. Over the years, the company introduced S Pen support (initially as an external accessory, then a built-in one) and bigger camera sensors, while also slimming the phones down. Quite clearly, it had the option to increase the battery capacity, but Samsung chose to cut the thickness and add more hardware-based features rather than a bigger battery.
Now, with the Galaxy S27 Ultra, Samsung may not have to choose between two options. Well, removing a zoom camera already frees up some space on the inside, although it could be quickly eaten up by a larger processor and other hardware upgrades. But Samsung could still equip the Galaxy S27 Ultra with a substantially bigger battery, potentially touching 5,700mAh. The company could switch to the silicon-carbon battery technology to make that happen.
Leaks say Samsung built several S27 Ultra prototypes chasing more capacity. And at least one of them removed the S Pen and its silo to make room. The final product may keep the S Pen, but this shows that the company is finally trying to offer a bigger battery. It remains to be seen what we actually get next year.
60W charging stays
This is the one genuinely confirmed-looking spec, as it comes from a regulatory filing rather than a tipster. Both the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra appeared in China’s 3C certification database supporting 60W wired charging. That is the fastest Samsung has ever shipped on a Galaxy S phone, matching the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which reached 60W earlier this year and is still the only Galaxy S model that has it.
Wireless charging speed may also remain at 25W. And while the devices should be Qi2-ready, do not expect built-in magnets here. Samsung is unlikely to put magnets into its phones anytime soon. Not only do they make the device bulkier and heavier, but magnets also interfere with S Pen signals. S Pen already struggles to work properly if you put on a magnetic case. Imagine what happens if the magnets are inside the phone.
Nonetheless, with a redesigned camera slab, the Galaxy S27 Ultra should be compatible with more magnetic accessories once you put on a compatible Qi2 case. Hopefully, Samsung will someday develop an S Pen system that doesn’t conflict with magnets.
A similar display experience with privacy protection
The Galaxy S27 Ultra may not bring major upgrades to its display. We expect a similar display experience as the S26 Ultra, complete with Samsung’s Privacy Display technology, which may also come to the S27 Pro next year. As mentioned above, the S Pen also stays, and it still uses the same technology that requires a digitizer layer in the display assembly. There’s no substantial evidence pointing to a newer OLED material or a true 10-bit panel.
A self-healing display coating for enhanced durability?
Rumors suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra could get a major durability upgrade with self-healing glass. The technology could allow minor scratches and surface imperfections to gradually repair themselves, keeping the phone’s display looking newer for longer. Details about how the technology would work and how effective it would be remain unclear. However, if Samsung pulls it off, it could give the S27 Ultra an interesting advantage over rivals.
Polar ID looks unlikely
Earlier in the year, there were rumors that the S27 Ultra would introduce Polar ID, a Face ID-style authentication system that would have been a real security upgrade over Samsung’s current face unlock. However, a well-regarded leaker has since pushed back on that. So for now, expect Samsung’s face unlock to remain the convenient option with a camera-based system rather than the secure one, with the ultrasonic fingerprint reader still doing the serious work.
Exynos or Snapdragon, still undecided
Every year brings this question, and this year the answer is genuinely not settled. Leaks show Samsung testing the Galaxy S27 Ultra with both Exynos and Snapdragon silicon, with the regional split unknown. The company wants to put its in-house processor, the 2nm Exynos 2700, in the Ultra, but nothing is set in stone yet.
The chip itself has been leaked in some detail. A die shot shows a redesigned architecture keeping a 10-core CPU, with changes to the GPU, cache, NPU, and memory support. It appears well-equipped to challenge Qualcomm’s latest flagships.
Price and release date
Samsung has announced nothing about the Galaxy S27 series. Every model in the Galaxy S27 lineup is expected in early 2027, in line with recent Galaxy S launches. Pricing has not leaked in any form worth repeating, and we will not guess at it here. Early leaks name Black, White, Blue, Purple, and Pink colors, but we cannot confirm just yet.
