Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood admitted that he was left ‘asking’ one question around a key decision from Ruben Amorim in Manchester United’s win over Sunderland.

However, the 56-year-old former Tottenham manager was proven wrong over the call that Ruben Amorim made for Saturday’s Premier League tie at Old Trafford.

Manchester United hosted Sunderland at home for their final match ahead of the October international break, with the Red Devils coming on top at the weekend.

Bryan Mbeumo set up Mason Mount for United’s first-half opener against the Black Cats, with the United No 7 producing a superb finish to break the deadlock.

Matheus Cunha was dropped to the bench and Mason Mount was brought into the Manchester United attack to play alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Mount earned praise from United fans for his stunning performance at Old Trafford on Saturday, with the former England international coming off in the second half.

United manager Ruben Amorim subbed off Mount in the 65th minute for Matheus Cunha, who had started the 3-1 Premier League defeat to Brentford last weekend.

Tim Sherwood was left to eat his words after questioning Amorim’s call to play Mount in the left-sided No 10 role in his system over summer signing Cunha.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I asked why is Mason Mount playing over Matheus Cunha? Exactly this reason!

“He’s a goal threat. It was all Sunderland, but it’s a fantastic start, goal-wise. It’s a great finish past [Robin] Roefs.”

Tim Sherwood drops high praise for Mason Mount again before the Man Utd star came off for Matheus Cunha in the Sunderland match

Mount, whose Old Trafford playing spell has been start-stop due to injuries, has stood out this season when he has played in an attacking role under Amorim.

Amorim has been an admirer of the former Three Lions star and Mount produced a show-stealing performance to show his eye-catching qualities in the final third.

Outside of United’s first-half opener, Mount linked up superbly well with Mbeumo and Sesko in the attack and Sherwood enjoyed how the former Blues ace drifted in.

“What a save. Really impressive at the moment, Man Utd,” Sherwood said during the match.

“Sesko’s at the heart of everything they’re doing. You’ve got Mbeumo and Mount coming inside for the flick-ons.”

Mount has made seven appearances across all competitions for United this season and the former Blues star has scored once and registered an assist as well.
