Apple TV horror-comedy Widow’s Bay has made Emmy history after winning 14 awards across this year’s ceremonies, the most ever for a comedy series in a single season.
It surpasses the previous comedy record of 13, set by The Studio last year.
Widow’s Bay took six prizes at Monday night’s 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, including Best Comedy Series, adding to eight wins at the Creative Arts Emmys a week earlier.
Welsh star Matthew Rhys also made history on the night, becoming the first performer to win two Emmys for lead acting in the same year.
Rhys was named Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as small-town mayor Tom Loftis in Widow’s Bay, having earlier won Best Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix psychological thriller The Beast in Me.
Together with his 2018 drama win for The Americans, the 51-year-old also became the first male performer to win across all three lead acting categories.
Jean Smart won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Award for Hacks
Paying tribute to his home country as he collected his second award, Rhys said: “We are a small but mighty nation. This is incredible.”
Widow’s Bay, which follows a New England island community dealing with a centuries-old curse, also brought wins for Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root in the supporting comedy acting categories.
Katie Dippold won for writing, while Hiro Murai took the award for directing.
Jean Smart continued her remarkable run with Hacks, winning Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time.
Smart, who plays stand-up comedian Deborah Vance, became the first performer to win the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy for every season of a show’s run.
The Pitt star Noah Wyle landed his second Emmy for playing Dr. “Robby” Robinavitch on the medical drama
In the drama categories, The Pitt retained the award for Best Drama Series, while Noah Wyle won Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second year running for his performance as Dr Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
Rhea Seehorn picked up her first Emmy, winning Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus.
DTF St. Louis was named Best Limited or Anthology Series, while Sally Field won Best Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
The US version of The Traitors won Outstanding Reality Competition Series for the third consecutive year, while The Late Show with Stephen Colbert took Outstanding Variety Series.
Michael J. Fox was honoured by the academy
Dublin cinematographer Darran Tiernan had already secured his first Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys, winning Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) for his work on the episode Step Into My Office from the Prime Video superhero series Spider-Noir.
Michael J Fox was also honoured with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his work supporting Parkinson’s disease research through the Michael J Fox Foundation.
The ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles was hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay.
