Michael Fassbender and Taylor Russell’s Korean sci-fi thriller has secured an unexpected domestic box-office win following its North American expansion.
Distributed by Neon, the movie Hope grossed $3.3 million over the three-day weekend, including $975,000 on Friday, $1.3 million on Saturday, and $1 million on Sunday across 1,560 theaters. As of now, the sci-fi thriller has earned $42.2 million worldwide, according to The Numbers. In its home country, the movie has earned $36 million and ranked No. 1 at the box office for two consecutive weekends.
Earlier, the movie was projected to earn $1 million on Friday, with a three-day weekend total of approximately $3.6 million. Over 5 days, the movie was projected to earn $5-5.3 million, according to Deadline.
In addition, Hope has earned a 79% Tomatometer and Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. According to the critic consensus, Hope is “an unhinged sci-fi epic that boasts awe-inspiring production design and amusingly quaint visual effects; Na Hong-jin’s Hope gets the adrenaline pumping whenever it focuses on the unraveling of its hapless human heroes.”
The box office numbers tell only part of the Hope story
The R-rated South Korean sci-fi action thriller Hope is directed by Na Hong-jin, best known for The Wailing. In the movie, Fassbender and Russell, alongside Alicia Vikander and Cameron Britton, play the antagonist aliens from the planet Gh’ertu.
Hope’s official synopsis reads, “In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki, set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”
The movie also features Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-Sung, Hoyeon, Eum Moon-suk, Lee Sang-hee, and Kim Hyun-Suk. Na also served as the screenwriter and producer of the movie. Kim Saerom and Kim Saemi also served as producers, with Hong Jeongin as executive producer.
