Toyota’s Hilux may be around for the last 70 years, but its basic purpose hasn’t changed. It is made to be a functional load-carrying workhorse with Four Wheel Drive capability for those who need substance over style.
The latest version of the double cab Hilux to arrive here has gone on view at the National Ploughing Championships.
It has had various styling tweaks inspired by the Land Cruiser – pronounced lines and flanks, a new honeycomb grille and slim new headlights – yet the dimensions remain essentially the same as the older model in terms of length, height and width.

The entry-level version starts at €44,234, excluding VAT, and it gets some interesting kit as standard. Adaptive cruise control, a 12.3″ infotainment screen, electric steering and a heated steering wheel are all standard, and the padding and upholstery in the front seats has been strengthened and improved.
The Hilux is also Apple and Android enabled and has wireless phone charging.
The engine is the familiar 2.8 diesel, and there’s a mild-hybrid functionality. Toyota claims an average fuel consumption figure of 9.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.
There’s a stop/start function for driving in traffic, and the mild-hybrid system allows energy to be regenerated from braking. The 48 V battery is charged by the engine.

The payload is 1,000 kilos, and the towing rating for braked trailers is 3,500 kilos. Ground clearance is 309 mms. The suspension system is the same as the previous model, but there is a new rear axle.
The standard warranty on the Hilux is a three-year one, but this can be extended to ten years, or 185,000 kilometres, with a yearly Toyota servicing agreement.
