The Governor of the Central Bank Gabriel Makhlouf has called for Europe to move faster to complete the single market.

In a speech to the Eurofi Financial Forum in Dublin Mr Makhlouf said that Europe is “not realising the potential of the European economy”.

He has called for “faster” progress on the freedom of movement of goods, services and capital.

“You cannot have a genuinely integrated capital market without integrated goods and services markets, because capital follows real economic activity.

“You cannot have genuine cross-border banking without cross border corporates,” he said.

Mr Makhlouf called for the EU to complete the banking union and to fix barriers that stop banks operating across borders.

He said there should be more focus on simplifying regulations.
