Arsenal to win

After a hard-fought 2-0 win at Sunderland, Arsenal’s perfect start to 2026/27 faces another stern test, with Mikel Arteta’s men travelling to a Brighton & Hove Albion side flying domestically at the moment, having thrashed new boys Coventry 5-0 last Sunday.

Both teams were in midweek EFL Cup action, with Brighton securing an excellent 3-2 comeback victory from 2-0 down against Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Arsenal ran out 4-2 winners at Ipswich.

Unlike Man United, however, Arsenal boast an excellent record against Brighton, and are looking to make it eight games unbeaten against the Seagulls on Saturday. The Gunners have won five of their last seven encounters with Fabian Hurzeler’s men overall.

Brighton’s attack can pose problems for the Arsenal defence, as the Seagulls have scored 20 goals across their seven games in all competitions this season. However, recent results suggest that Arsenal are the type of team with the ability to nullify Brighton’s attacking unit, with five clean sheets in their opening seven fixtures this season.

Everton to win

Everton will look to maintain their unbeaten record in the Premier League, as their still-gleaming Hill-Dickinson Stadium hosts an Ipswich Town side that conceded four to a second-string Arsenal side midweek.

Despite drawing each of their last three games, Everton are clear favourites – though it’s not a pick without a warning label, as only one of the eight seasons spanning 2018/19-2025/26 saw the Toffees go unbeaten in their home league games against newly-promoted sides.

The season in question was 2024/25, though a relegation-bound Ipswich could well have kept the chain going, had they been given more time to complete a comeback from 2-0 down in their last trip to Everton, which ended 2-2.

That was the Toffees’ penultimate men’s senior game at Goodison Park, back in May 2025. But since then, David Moyes has truly made the squad his own once again, and just like they were through much of his first tenure, they’re difficult to break down. That should see them over the line if Ipswich are as porous at the back as they were against Arsenal.

Sasa Lukic to be carded

Having scraped a 1-0 win over second-tier Wolves in the League Cup on Wednesday evening, Everton also go into this one with back-to-back clean sheets, following last Saturday’s goalless stalemate at Tottenham. Even if they are a bit light up front, they’ve got the ability to frustrate Ipswich.

Known as a persistent fouler and a go-to player in the cards market, Sasa Lukic is the ideal player for Everton to target in the psychological battle, having already been booked twice this season.

On the other side of the equation, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has become a standout for Everton in central areas. Having kept up his 100% record of landing at least one shot on target per league game last Saturday, Dewsbury-Hall is currently averaging three shots per game and 1.3 shots on target per 90.

Though he’s not the out-and-out alternative to Thierno Barry that many Everton fans crave, it’s worth remembering that his only goal of 2026/27 to date was a peach, as he opened the scoring in fine style against Crystal Palace on day one.

Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the season was shattered away at Leeds on Monday night, with multiple defensive calamities seeing them thrashed 4-1. The Tyneside faithful rightly demand a response against Championship playoff winners Hull City, with whom they are deadlocked in terms of PL head-to-heads (W2, D2, L2 each).

But it’s easier said than done against a Tigers side that is yet to lose in the league this term (W2, D2) or in any Premier League clash at St James’ Park (W2, D1). Intriguingly, the first of those Tyneside wins came in September 2008 – shortly after Hull’s first promotion via the Championship playoffs – and proved pivotal to Newcastle’s relegation eight months later.

Just as it did at Wembley four months ago, history could well repeat itself this Saturday, as the similarities to Phil Brown’s quick-starting 2008/09 Hull squad are startling. Back then, Hull menaced the top four with some standout results against the traditional big boys, and this generation’s pack of Tigers got another one only last weekend, claiming a 2-2 draw at Chelsea after leading 2-1 late on.

Mohamed Belloumi netted both of Hull’s goals, and thus continued a personal fairytale after an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign. Boasting seven goal contributions in 12 league starts for Hull, he’s our pick to make an impact again, and give the Tyneside faithful a few nervous moments at least, having averaged 0.8 shots on target per 90 minutes so far this campaign.
