Jordan Flynn says Mayo are “milking it for everything we can” as they continued their All-Ireland SFC celebrations on the season opener of The Late Late Show on Friday night.
Following Flynn and Stephen Coen’s opening of The Ploughing Championships on Tuesday, manager Andy Moran, selector Colm Boyle, captain Jack Coyne and 12 other All-Ireland winners joined presenter Patrick Kielty in Dublin on the eve of senior quarter-final weekend in the county.
Asked about their on-stage appearance with The Saw Doctors for their rendition of “The Green and Red of Mayo” at Electric Picnic last month, Flynn said: “No more than being here this evening, we’re milking it for everything we can.
“Electric Picnic was pretty cool, to be fair. I think we were only supposed to be out there for one song. But thankfully Eoin McGreal and the bit of youth, he decided he was going to run down the middle and bring us all into the middle of the action.”
Asked about the celebrations since their historic victory over Kerry in July, Aidan O’Shea smiled: “We have done it pretty well, haven’t we? It’s been an amazing couple of weeks. Some boys have done it more than others. Jordan has done a good job. Ryan (O’Donoghue) and Darragh Beirne, a few of them have done a really good job of making it to everything.
“But no, look, I think they’ve been dead right. The energy we’ve got since we’ve won the final and getting home to Mayo and meeting people. And obviously, you see the stuff at Electric Picnic, but the boys have been in schools this morning.
“And then I think Jack (Carney) had it here in Dublin, even with his own kids in the school (St Patrick’s National School, Corduff). And the reception was unbelievable, so even the Dubs were happy!”
Moran mentioned players and the Sam Maguire Cup will be visiting the county’s diaspora in the coming weeks. Next Saturday, some of them will travel with the Sam Maguire Cup for a Mayo Association of Chicago fundraising dinner. A similar one takes place in New York on October 17.
The identity of Mayo’s All-Star nominations will be revealed on Tuesday morning before the All-Stars gala on October 30. The following day, they head out to Barbados on their team holiday.
On November 28, they face Kerry in a challenge in Saracens’ StoneX Stadium, in what is building up to be a big weekend for the Mayo Association London. Moran said he is looking at December 1 as an unofficial cut-off point for the celebrations.
As he lines out for Crossmolina against Garrymore today, Kobe McDonald confirmed he will be returning to Australia at the start of November, likely meaning he will miss the team holiday. He will return to Ireland for his brother Jordan’s wedding at the end of the year before returning to St Kilda for the bulk of pre-season training in January.
On Friday, Moran spoke glowingly of the teenager: “If you’re on about ambassadors for Gaelic football and ambassadors for Mayo at 18 years of age, to do what he did, but then to take on… he didn’t shy away from the media, he didn’t shy away from any of his responsibilities.
“We wish him well. We will welcome him with open arms if he ever decides to come back.”
