Over €2.5m was spent doing up Blackpool Shopping Centre

A well-known coffee chain has opened its first location on the northside as part of Blackpool Shopping Centre’s major €2.5m upgrade.

Boxd is the newest addition to the busy shopping centre, with plenty of eager customers queuing on the first day to sample what it has to offer. Boxd is known for good coffee and a simple menu of delicious drinks and tasty treats that you can eat on the go.

The new coffee dock will be open seven days a week from 8 am to 6 pm – ideal for those looking for an early morning pick-me-up, a caffeine boost during the afternoon shop, or a quick post-work treat.

It’s the brand’s first expansion north of the Lee. It specialises in ‘drive-thru and walk-up’ coffee, with very popular locations on Bandon Road, a drive-thru on the Carrigrohane Road and in Ballincollig.

Boxd previously opened a drive-thru in Midleton, but it was shut down earlier over a planning permission issue. The company later applied for retention permission for the East Cork drive-thru, but Cork County Council refused the application.

Boxd isn’t the only new addition to Blackpool, as following the €2.5m refurbishment, there are plenty of new retail offerings. This includes recently added stores from Danish home-furnishings brand JYSK, Eason, Kerry Hanaphy, and The Pantry.

There has been a “comprehensive” upgrade of the building’s centre. Scores of workers spent hours adding new flooring, improved lighting, signage, and other smaller finishing touches to make the whole layout look a little nicer.

The shopping centre is home to 60 businesses supporting almost 2,000 jobs, and the recent upgrade forms part of a long-term plan to attract new retailers and customers.

The project marks a “significant new chapter” for the location as big developments are underway for the Northside – including a new train station to be built right next to the popular retail hub.
