After delivering a slew of memorable action roles over the last two decades, Liam Neeson has cemented his status as a staple in the genre. His gruff voice and menacing physicality have helped make him a figure who reliably draws in viewers, and it’s safe to say that his action filmography has grown into a genre in and of itself.
However, Neeson isn’t entirely limited to action. Before making a name for himself in the genre, he was prominent in drama, romance, and even fantasy movies. One of his latest ventures into other genres was a small sci-fi thriller that saw him play his usual persona in a completely different setting. The 99-minute film – which Stranger Things fans will absolutely adore – was successful on streaming when it premiered, and months later, it continues to soar on the charts. It appears that action isn’t Neeson’s only strong suit.
Liam Neeson Meets ‘Stranger Things’ in ‘Cold Storage’
Cold Storage is a sci-fi thriller with a heavy dose of comedy that follows Neeson as Robert Quinn, one of the few people capable of containing a parasitic alien fungus that’s trying to take over the world. Quinn’s first contact with the fungus was decades ago, when a botched mission ended in multiple deaths, with the fungus eventually being secured in an underground facility. Now, the vault containing the alien organism has failed, and Quinn must team up with night guards Travis and Naomi to try to stop it from spreading.
The film’s look and feel is reminiscent of ’80s sci-fi movies like The Blob, making it a natural choice for fans of Stranger Things. Additionally, Joe Keery, star of the Netflix fantasy horror epic, has a major part in the movie. Additionally, the mix between practical gory effects and great CGI, and the good balance between horror and comedy elements, prompt comparisons to the series.
Another reason Cold Storage stands out is its cast and crew. The film is directed by Jonny Campbell, the director famous for his work in Westworld, In the Flesh, and Dracula. The screenplay was written by David Koepp, who wrote the Spielberg blockbusters Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds and authored the novel of the same name that inspired Cold Storage.
However, the most impressive aspect of the movie is its star-studded cast, with Georgina Campbell of Barbarian fame joining Neeson and Keery in the lead. Cold Storage also features Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville and Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave in prominent roles.
‘Cold Storage’ Has Definitely Found Its Audience on Streaming
After a limited theatrical run at the beginning of this year, Cold Storage started streaming on MGM+, where it found a much-deserved success. The critical reception was also positive; today, it holds an 81% critics’ score and a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Months after its premiere on streaming, people are still tuning in. At the time of this writing, the sci-fi comedy sits at No. 8 among the streamer’s most-watched movies and TV shows. Other highly popular titles on the list include SAS Rogue Heroes, The Westies, From, and The Shawshank Redemption.
