Design and display
Lava Virat V1 5G does not try to stand out with a radically different design. Its flat plastic back gets a patterned finish that adds some texture and keeps the phone from looking too plain.We tested the Arya Blue version, which has a more understated look than the Sonar Gold option. The phone weighs 210g and measures 8.75mm in thickness, so we do notice its size in hand, but the weight feels reasonably distributed during everyday use.
The power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, while the volume and power keys are placed within easy reach. The phone also carries an IP64 rating, which offers some protection from dust and water splashes. The waterdrop notch on the front, however, makes the design feel a little dated.The Virat V1 5G comes with a 6.75-inch HD+ LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. We find the large screen useful for watching videos, scrolling through social media and browsing the web, while the higher refresh rate makes scrolling feel smoother.
The 720 x 1600-pixel resolution is not the sharpest in this segment, and text can look a little less crisp when we read for longer periods. Colours are generally lively, although lighter shades and whites can appear slightly warm. For everyday entertainment, though, we find the display reasonably good for a phone at this price.
Performance
Lava Virat V1 5G runs on the Unisoc T8200 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. In our daily use, the phone feels reasonably smooth for basic tasks such as browsing, messaging, scrolling through social media and switching between lighter apps. The clean Android 16 interface also keeps the overall experience simple and familiar, although a few pre-installed apps such as Adobe Scan, Tile Explorer and Phone Clone are included.The limitations become more noticeable when we push the phone harder. We notice occasional stutters while multitasking, particularly when switching between apps or using YouTube in full-screen mode. Opening a video in landscape mode or moving to a pop-up window can also take a moment. This is where the 4GB RAM and entry-level processor start to show their limits.For casual gaming, the Virat V1 5G can handle lighter titles such as Subway Surfers, Temple Run 2 and Angry Birds, although occasional frame drops are possible. More demanding games may require lower graphics settings, and this is not a phone we would pick primarily for heavy gaming.On the positive side, we did not notice excessive heating during regular use or gaming, although the phone can get warm while charging or during heavier tasks.
Camera
Lava Virat V1 5G comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. We find the main camera good enough for casual photography, especially when we are simply looking to save everyday moments. In daylight, the camera can capture reasonably decent images, although fine details are not its strongest point. Photos can sometimes look over-processed, with textures and skin details appearing smoother than they should.
The camera does a better job with portrait shots, where we find the subject separation fairly reliable and the edges are usually detected well. Colours are mostly natural with neutral subjects, but brighter scenes can introduce some noise, particularly when we photograph greenery.Low-light shots are usable for the price, although we should not expect much detail in darker areas. The 5-megapixel selfie camera is also adequate for basic selfies and video calls, but it tends to brighten skin tones slightly. Overall, the cameras are suited to personal photos rather than users who want to regularly create high-quality social media content.
Battery
Lava Virat V1 5G packs a 6,000mAh battery, which is one of the more useful features for everyday users. In our daily use, the large battery should be enough to get through a full day without constantly looking for a charger, especially with regular browsing, messaging, social media and video streaming.However, the 10W charging support is a clear compromise. While the charger is included in the box, topping up such a large battery takes considerably more time than phones that support faster charging. So, while we like the battery capacity for its endurance, we would have preferred faster charging to make the overall experience more convenient.
Verdict
At Rs 12,999, the Lava Virat V1 5G is a fairly straightforward budget smartphone that gets several basics right. Its 6,000mAh battery, 120Hz display, clean Android 16 experience and 5G connectivity make it suitable for everyday tasks such as browsing, social media, streaming and messaging. The build also feels reasonably comfortable despite the phone’s size.However, the Unisoc T8200 processor and 4GB RAM show their limitations during heavier multitasking, while the cameras are better suited to casual photography than serious content creation. The 10W charging is another area where the phone falls behind faster-charging rivals.Still, if your priorities are long battery life, a large display, clean software and basic 5G smartphone use, the Lava Virat V1 5G offers a practical package at Rs 12,999 and can be considered for users who do not need heavy performance or advanced cameras.
