A young veterinarian from the Inishowen peninsula has become one of the youngest board-certified small animal surgeons in Europe.
Dr. Brónach McClean, 30, originally from Malin, has officially been welcomed as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), one of the highest professional qualifications in veterinary surgery.
With this recognition, Dr. McClean is now an internationally recognised specialist in small animal surgery.
The path to specialist status in veterinary surgery is widely regarded as one of the most demanding in the profession.
Candidates must complete a rigorous training programme that typically lasts four to five years and includes intensive, directly mentored surgical case experience.
Alongside this clinical training, aspiring specialists are required to publish multiple peer-reviewed research papers and present their work at national and international scientific meetings.
In November 2024, Dr McClean won the resident research competition at the Veterinary Arthrology Advancement Association’s annual meeting in Munich.
More recently, she secured joint third place in the prestigious 2026 American College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Outstanding Surgery Residents’ Publication Award for her research into knee joint injection techniques in dogs.

The training journey culminated in a comprehensive and highly challenging certifying examination. Dr. McClean successfully completed her board examinations earlier this year in Zurich.
Dr. McClean was the first surgical resident at Veterinary Specialists Ireland, where she undertook much of her specialist training.

Her academic journey began locally. She attended Carndonagh Community School before going on to study veterinary medicine at University College Dublin. She graduated from UCD in 2020 and quickly began the demanding process of pursuing specialist surgical training.
Dr. McClean’s achievement represents a remarkable accomplishment not only for her personally but also for the wider community in Inishowen, highlighting the international success of a young professional who began her journey in one of Ireland’s most northerly villages.
Her recognition by the ECVS places her among a small and highly respected group of veterinary surgeons across Europe who have met the rigorous standards required to practise as specialist surgeons.
She is currently working at Veterinary Specialist Ireland in Co Meath, a state-of-the-art hospital providing specialist care for all small animals.
