Finally – drama on The Traitors Ireland (RTÉ One, 9.35pm, Sunday). After a go-slow season in which the Irish edition of the global phenomenon has arguably been the victim of the wider malaise of late onset Traitors fatigue, we are at last treated to genuine tension as the Round Table descends into a ding-dong shouting match. Raised voices, bulging eyeballs, Siobhán McSweeney taking it all in with a mischievous smirk. We are so back, people.

Back, except for Ian, who is voted off after committing the huge error of being quiet through the opening weeks and then unloading on Pete. Temperatures soar, words are exchanged – and that’s just Ian explaining why he has Pete in his sights.

“All you seem to be doing is attacking my character,” he tells Pete. “At least I make decisions,” comes the retort.

The consensus is that Ian is too unemotional for a Faithful. “That’s b****cks,” he replies. “I didn’t even cry at my dad’s funeral.” He doesn’t cry tonight either – even as he receives his marching orders.

Amid all this excitement, the actual Traitors, Carla and Pauric, sit back and take it all in. “They’re doing our jobs for us … it’s gas,” Pauric says.

Pauric is so off the radar he could pass for a stealth bomber with a man-bun. That isn’t the case with Carla, who has been tagged as a Traitor by Kayleigh. So why hasn’t Kayleigh voiced her suspicions at the table?

“I knew not to go for Carla tonight … knew not to put myself on the chopping block,” she says, after it has been revealed that the Traitors will be bumping off another Faithful after the credits roll.

So it’s utter chaos then, with the pot stirred further by Pete’s baffling decision to encourage/command Anna to personally bag €2,000 during the task segment of the episode. His logic was that she should come away with something for herself, as there was every chance she would be voted off.

Anna later claims she felt pressured to trouser the lolly and immediately regretted it – which is just what a guilty person would say. In fact, she and Pete are behaving so like Traitors that you have to wonder if they aren’t trying to get voted off on purpose.

Traitors acting like Faithfuls, Faithfuls acting like Traitors – it’s all gone insane in Slane. And with the finale airing Tuesday night, there is surely time still for one final twist.
