Ye returned to his hometown of Chicago on Tuesday (Sept. 22), but this visit was about more than music, memories, or the city’s famous deep-dish pizza. The artist formerly known as Kanye West joined city officials and several familiar faces to honor his late mother, Dr. Donda West, with a tribute that will remain part of Chicago’s streets for years to come.
Ye attended an honorary street naming ceremony where the city unveiled a new Dr. Donda West Way road sign at the corner of 78th Street and South Shore Drive. The moment celebrated a woman whose influence reached well beyond her family and into education, creativity, and the lives of countless people she helped along the way.
Chicago Celebrates Dr. Donda West
The ceremony began with Garrard McClendon, a writer and professor at Chicago State University, where Dr. West spent nearly 30 years and served as chair of the English department. Greg Mitchell, alderman for Chicago’s 7th Ward, then took the microphone to speak about the importance of the occasion.
Mitchell described the day as a chance to honor “a woman whose impact stretches far beyond the block, far beyond Chicago, and far beyond her lifetime.”
He also highlighted the many ways Dr. West influenced others, calling her “not only a scholar” but also a “builder of people,” “cultivator of talents,” and “champion for Black creativity and intellectual excellence.”
Those words painted a picture of a woman whose work extended beyond the classroom. While many people know Dr. West because of her famous son, her own career and contributions to education were central to the tribute.
Joining Ye and city officials at Tuesday’s ceremony were Rhymefest, GLC, Don C, and Really Doe. The gathering brought together people connected to Chicago’s creative community, adding another layer of familiarity to an already meaningful event.
A Playful Moment During the Ceremony
Although the ceremony focused on honoring Dr. West’s legacy, there was also a lighter moment that caught the crowd’s attention.
At one point, Mitchell amended his comments mid-sentence, seemingly at Ye’s behest. The adjustment sparked a playful exchange, and the crowd appeared to enjoy every second of it.
It was a reminder that even during a formal ceremony, a little personality can go a long way. And with Ye involved, a moment that starts with a speech can sometimes take an unexpected turn.
Ye Continues to Honor His Mother Through Music
Dr. Donda West died in 2007 at the age of 58. Comments later provided by a medical examiner cited “multiple post-operative factors following surgery” as a contributing factor in her death.
In the years since, Ye has continued to reference his mother in his music and creative work. Her influence is especially clear in Donda, his 2021 album named in her honor, which features samples of her voice.
The album served as a deeply personal tribute, bringing her presence into a project that explored family, loss, faith, and memory. For listeners, her voice helped connect the music to the person at the heart of its title.
More recently, Donda’s voice can be heard at the end of “Mama’s Favorite,” a song from Ye’s latest solo studio album as of this writing, BULLY.
The Chicago street naming adds another lasting tribute to Dr. West’s legacy. Her name will now be part of the city’s landscape, marking a connection between the educator, mother, and community figure she was and the hometown that helped shape her family’s story.
For Ye, Tuesday’s ceremony offered another opportunity to honor his mother. For Chicago, it marked a chance to recognize a woman whose impact, as Mitchell put it, stretched far beyond her lifetime.
