Gardaí have begun an investigation after the body of an unidentified man was discovered in undergrowth by a walkway at Ballyellis, Mallow, Co Cork.
The body, which had visible injuries, was found by a person walking their dog on the banks of the Blackwater river on the Killavullen side of Mallow at 1.30pm on Thursday. It is a popular area for walkers.
Assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster was carrying out a preliminary examination of the scene. It is believed the body had not been in situ for a long period. The area was cordoned off after the alarm was raised.
The remains were kept at the scene on Thursday evening and an examination was due to be conducted by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
The body of the middle-aged man was due to be removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital (CUH) on Thursday evening following the technical examination.
A postmortem examination is expected to be carried out by Bolster on Friday morning, which will help determine the course of the Garda investigation.
