A second half penalty from Isco was sufficient to give Real Betis their third successive win in the Champions League league phase as they saw off Feyenoord by the odd goal.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side had secured two 3-2 victories in their opening two games, the first away in Lille where Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott slid home the winner, and the second at home to Porto.
Parrott started up front for Betis once again, though spurned the best chance of the first half. The Basque side’s press created the opportunity, capitalising on loose passing from the visitors.
The ball was slipped into Parrott, who cut back inside the covering defender onto his right peg but blasted his shot straight at Tjark Ernst in goal for Feyenoord.
The Dubliner looked lively but was eventually subbed off with just over 10 minutes remaining. By that stage, Betis had found the game’s only goal.
A fizzed cross from the left side was deemed to have hit a hand in the penalty area, the ref pointing to the spot.
Isco, who scored the late winner against Porto, slid the ball inside the right hand post, as Ernst fell the other way.
