Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon has quashed any potential threat to pigmeat markets created by the confirmation of TB in Irish pigs, describing the issue as “small scale”.

“We’re not talking about something that’s on a large scale that is an endemic problem here,” he said, adding that TB is not a notifiable disease.

Understood to have been sporadically detected for a number of years, TB has been confirmed on nine pig farms in five counties so far this year.

“Obviously we pay very close attention to any disease and its trajectory, but ultimately here, this is all about pig farms,” he said.

“What’s really, really important is the bio-security measures that are in place, where their feed is stored, how that interacts, and how the people working on the farm move from one unit to another and beyond.”

There is no human health impact on the consumption of pigmeat.
