The Football Review Committee has solved a lot of the issues in Gaelic football, but there remains quite a few problems present in the GAA.

Some of those will attempt to be solved during the current rule trials, with both football and hurling set to test out potential tweaks to the laws of the game. That is largely based around small changes to the intricacies of each sport.

In saying that, some feel that there is a growing issue in the GAA that needs to be addressed.

Oisin McConville calls out emerging GAA trend

It is clear that many GAA teams are getting more astute when it comes to bending the rules of the game, something that has led to an increase in apparent simulation at inter-county level.

It is rare to watch a game in the modern era with at least one incident of a player going to ground in an attempt to get an opponent in trouble.

Writing in the Irish Independent, Oisin McConville labelled the practice as ’embarrassing’ and suggested a new punishment that should be introduced by the GAA.

The course of action nowadays seems to be that you go down and roll around on the floor like you’ve been shot.

Even in the Premier League, watching a grown man flop about on the floor holding his face when he was barely touched is very hard to stomach, but to see it in Gaelic football now – I just think it’s beyond embarrassing…

A black card is the only appropriate punishment for such an occasion, and I think it would stamp this out of the game so quickly that we would never have to talk about it again.

In the current GAA rule book, incidents of simulation are punishable by yellow cards. However, it is difficult to recall an incident where such a punishment was doled out.

That is despite the fact that ‘going down easily’ is become increasingly prevalent in the sport.

Will GAA attempt to stamp out simulation?

It remains unclear if the GAA have any intention to beef up the punishments surrounding incidents such as this, but it is interesting to see that a current inter-county manager is of the opinion that it is a major scourge in the game at the moment.

Simulation is something that no supporter enjoys seeing on a pitch, even if it could potentially give an advantage to their team.
