WHITEHOUSE, Ohio (WTVG) – A Metroparks Toledo nature photographer shared tips for taking fall photos at Oak Openings. Art Weber spoke with 13 Action News about equipment, lighting, backgrounds and where to focus in a photo.
Equipment
Weber’s first piece of advice was not to worry about equipment.
“The best camera is whatever you have with you at the time that you see something cool and you can make something work,” Weber said.
Lighting and background
Weber said lighting is a key part of a fall photo. A darker background can make colors stand out, he said.
“We’ve got brightly lit leaves and a dark background, which makes the leaves stand out, so that’s the kind of thing we look for, backgrounds that recede and subjects that come forward,” Weber said.
Finding an anchor
Weber said a photo needs a point for the viewer’s eye to focus on.
“It’s a good idea to look for something in the photo that’s an anchor because people don’t just look at a photo all at once. They look at something that draws their attention, their eye moves through a photo and it needs a spot to land,” Weber said.
Weber said not every photo will turn out.
“There’s no wrong answers this time of year, and anyone who comes out shooting and tells you they don’t take bad photos from time to time is lying because it happens. Don’t get discouraged. This can be as basic as you want or as complicated as you want,” Weber said.
