Zimmer Communications names radio programming veteran Mike Stern Director of Programming, effective Nov. 16. Stern joins the Missouri-based broadcaster after 13 years at Jacobs Media, where he served as a consultant.
In his new role, Stern will oversee programming, music and on-air strategy across Zimmer’s radio stations. He will work alongside Corporate Operations Director Trevor Morgan and General Manager Carla Leible.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to join Zimmer Communications,” Stern says. “I’ve consulted them for more than a decade, so I know it is a first-class radio operation that still believes in being local and connecting with listeners. I’d like to thank Carla Leible and Trevor Morgan for making this possible.”
Morgan says Stern’s creativity, organization and ability to develop compelling content have already made an impact on Zimmer’s stations through his consulting work.
“Mike has a genuine passion for creating great radio,” Morgan says. “We’re excited to bring his expertise and experience to all our brands as we continue to create great content and find meaningful ways to connect with our listeners and advertisers.”
Leible says Stern’s familiarity with Zimmer’s operations and culture will help strengthen its stations as the company continues to grow.
“Mike is one of the most respected programming minds in our industry, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have him joining our team,” Leible says. “Having worked with Mike for years through Jacobs Media, we know firsthand the experience, creativity, and leadership he brings.”
She adds that Stern will play an important role in strengthening the company’s stations, developing talent and positioning Zimmer for continued success.
Stern’s appointment marks his third departure from Jacobs Media. Company President Fred Jacobs says the firm is pleased to see him join Zimmer.
“This ends Mike’s third stint with Jacobs Media, and we couldn’t be happier for him,” Jacobs says. “Zimmer is a wonderful company and is a great fit for him. We appreciate Mike’s contributions to our company over the years.”
During his latest tenure at Jacobs Media, Stern consulted with more than 50 radio stations, helping them increase market share and drive revenue. His work included research to identify audience growth opportunities, cross-platform promotional campaigns and coaching on-air talent to improve content and expand social and digital presence.
Before joining Jacobs Media, Stern programmed stations in Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, Detroit, Las Vegas and Dayton.
He also served as Vice President of Programming for Emmis Communications in Chicago, overseeing alternative station “Q101” WKQX and former classic rock station “The Loop” WLUP.
