Beloved Robert E. Smith mural recreated in downtown Springfield after community outcry

  • November 5, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A celebrated tribute to renowned Springfield folk artist Robert E. Smith has returned to downtown Springfield, months after the original public artwork was painted over by a new property owner.

A pair of regional muralists has nearly finished replicating the iconic piece along the 300 block of North Boonville Avenue. The recreation is complete aside from a protective clear sealant, which will be applied once weather conditions permit.

Community backlash sparks restoration campaign

The original mural was covered with fresh paint in March when a new downtown business owner began preparing the exterior wall for a different mural—a large eagle honoring U.S. military veterans.

The unexpected loss of Smith’s artwork triggered an immediate wave of public outcry from local artists, historians, and downtown advocates who viewed the colorful mural as a foundational piece of Springfield’s cultural heritage.

Following the backlash, community organizers launched a grassroots crowdfunding campaign to faithfully recreate the artwork in a new, prominent downtown location. Donations quickly flooded in to cover the cost of paint, lift rentals, and artist compensation.

Among the top contributors listed on the project’s GoFundMe page was the business owner who had painted over the original mural, donating $5,000 toward the restoration effort.

Honoring a celebrated Ozarks folk artist

Robert E. Smith, who died in 2010, was a widely recognized Missouri outsider artist celebrated for his vibrant, expressive depictions of Springfield street scenes, local figures, and everyday Ozarks life.

One of the muralists working on the replica said she was not intimately familiar with Smith’s artwork prior to the public reaction in March. However, witnessing the community’s passionate defense of his legacy inspired her to take on the restoration project.

Organizers plan to announce a formal public unveiling and dedication ceremony once the protective weather coating is applied.
