From a childhood marked by poverty to becoming a global sporting phenomenon, Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey is a story of extraordinary talent, ambition, records and an influence that stretches far beyond football.
Ronaldo has said goodbye to Portugal, bringing the curtain down on one of the most illustrious international careers in football history.
Since making his debut for his country in 2003, Ronaldo went on to make a world-record 234 international appearances, scoring 146 goals and rewriting the record books along the way.
But Ronaldo’s story goes far beyond goals, trophies and records. From his humble beginnings on a small Portuguese island to becoming one of the most recognisable and influential personalities on the planet, his life is filled with remarkable stories, surprising facts and extraordinary achievements.
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO FOOTBALL SUPERSTAR
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Funchal, on the picturesque Portuguese island of Madeira, located around 800 kilometres off the mainland. His name has an interesting story of its own: he was named Ronaldo after his father’s favourite actor, Ronald Reagan, who was then the president of the United States.
Ronaldo grew up in poverty, sharing a bedroom with his three siblings. Football, however, offered him a dream that would eventually take him far beyond the island where he was born.
His childhood idols were Brazilian football stars Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. At just 12 years old, he joined Sporting CP’s academy in Lisbon, leaving his family behind to pursue his dream. By the age of 14, he had dropped out of school to concentrate fully on becoming a professional footballer.
It was a bold decision for a young boy, but one that would change football history.
THE BEGINNING OF AN INTERNATIONAL LEGACY
Ronaldo’s international journey began in August 2003. During a match against Kazakhstan, Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari brought the 18-year-old on at half-time to replace Luis Figo.
Portugal won 1-0, and Ronaldo was named Player of the Match. It was the beginning of a remarkable international career that would span more than two decades.
THE PHENOMENAL ATHLETICISM
Ronaldo’s physical abilities have often seemed almost unreal. His aerial ability, in particular, has drawn comparisons with the extraordinary jumping power associated with NBA legend Michael Jordan.
Not only is he a powerful and precise header of the ball, but he has also produced some of football’s most spectacular leaps.
In 2013, playing for Real Madrid against Manchester United, Ronaldo reportedly reached an astonishing height of 2.93 metres during a jump. In 2019, while playing for Juventus against Sampdoria, he scored another spectacular header after leaping approximately 2.57 metres.
These moments demonstrated that Ronaldo’s extraordinary athleticism was just as important to his game as his technical ability.
THE CELEBRATION THAT CONQUERED THE WORLD
One of the most recognisable celebrations in sport belongs to Ronaldo.
The famous ‘Siuuu!’ celebration, meaning ‘Yes!’, first became part of his repertoire in 2013. What began as a personal expression of excitement quickly turned into a worldwide phenomenon.
Footballers across the globe have copied it, while athletes from the MLB, NBA and NFL have also performed the iconic celebration. Today, it is almost as recognisable as Ronaldo himself.
A GLOBAL CELEBRITY BEYOND FOOTBALL
Ronaldo is not simply a football superstar; he is a global cultural phenomenon.
His influence on social media is extraordinary. According to the figures cited, he has approximately 679 million Instagram followers, making him the platform’s most-followed individual. Lionel Messi follows with 517 million, ahead of Selena Gomez (402 million), Kylie Jenner (381 million) and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (380 million).
On Facebook, Ronaldo is also the most-liked individual, with around 171 million followers, ahead of Shakira’s 123 million. On X, he has approximately 115 million followers, placing him behind Elon Musk (216 million) and Barack Obama (131 million).
His digital success reached another milestone in August 2024 when he launched his YouTube channel, UR Cristiano. It became the fastest channel to reach one million subscribers, achieving the milestone in just 90 minutes.
In September 2024, Ronaldo became the first person to surpass one billion followers across social media platforms.
His worldwide popularity has also been recognised by ESPN. He topped all four editions of the ESPN World Fame 100, in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Financially, Ronaldo has been equally extraordinary. He has topped Forbes’ World’s Highest-Paid Athletes list a record six times, in 2016, 2017, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. He has also finished among the top three in each of the last 14 years.
THE MAN BEHIND THE GLOBAL ICON
Despite his worldwide fame and extraordinary wealth, Ronaldo’s personal story remains closely connected to his family and humble beginnings.
His mother, Maria Dolores, once revealed that if her youngest son had not become a footballer, he might have ended up working as a bricklayer.
It is a remarkable thought considering the global superstar he eventually became.
Ronaldo also has a favourite Portuguese dish: Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional meal made with salted cod, thinly sliced potatoes, onions, eggs, olives and parsley.
His family has musical connections too. His sister Katia is a Latin pop singer who was once known by the stage name Ronalda.
A GARAGE FIT FOR A SUPERSTAR
Ronaldo’s passion for luxury cars is almost as impressive as his football collection of records and trophies.
His extraordinary car collection has been estimated to be worth around $28 million.
Among its highlights is a Bugatti Centodieci, reportedly costing around $9 million and one of only 10 examples produced. Another standout is the McLaren Senna, built as a tribute to legendary Formula One driver Ayrton Senna.
His collection also features luxury models from Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche and Rolls-Royce.
TRAVEL, MUSIC AND LIFESTYLE
When it comes to travelling, Ronaldo has a taste for some of the world’s most glamorous and beautiful destinations. Places he loves include AlUla, Dubai, London, Madeira, New York, Paris and the Red Sea.
His musical taste is equally varied. He particularly enjoys hip-hop and R&B, reggaeton, samba, Latin music and electronic dance music.
Ronaldo’s love story with Georgina Rodríguez also began in an unexpected setting. The pair met in 2016 when Ronaldo visited a Gucci store to buy a suit, where Georgina was working as a shop assistant. Their encounter would eventually develop into one of the world’s most recognisable celebrity relationships.
YES, THERE IS A UNIVERSITY COURSE ABOUT HIM!
Ronaldo’s influence has even reached the world of academia.
The University of British Columbia has offered a sociology course examining The Phenomenon of Cristiano Ronaldo, exploring the wider social and cultural significance of his global popularity.
It is another indication that his influence extends well beyond the football pitch.
WHAT DOES RONALDO DO WHEN HE IS NOT PLAYING FOOTBALL?
For someone whose life revolves around training, competition and maintaining peak performance, Ronaldo has a surprisingly varied list of interests.
In his limited free time, he enjoys playing poker and table tennis, collecting luxury watches and watching documentaries and television series.
He is also a fan of tennis, the NBA and the UFC.
