There’ve been warm tributes this weekend for the former Sligo goalkeeper Noel Mullaney, who has died at the age of 88.

A founding member of the St Michael’s GAA Club in Sligo, Mullaney was a hugely popular figure in GAA circles across the county and beyond.

Ocean FM Sport paid this tribute to him on Sunday’s programme.

He played with distinction for his native Sooey, for Sligo at senior intercounty level, for Connacht at Railway Cup level – and once played for his native county in a gaelic football match in the famous Wembley tournament, at Wembley Stadium, in 1966.

Mullaney was central to the formation of the St Michael’s GAA club in Ballintogher – and one of his proudest moments was seeing the team reach the Connacht junior club football final in 2019.

He was also a noted ceílí dancer for much of his life.

The picture accompanying this article is a presentation Noel made to Sligo minor football captain and goalkeeper (and fellow St Michael’s clubman) Kyle Davey, when he lifted the Connacht minor football title for the Yeats County in 2021.
