Spoiler Alert: This list contains spoilers for ‘Wednesday’ Season 2.Wednesday premiered in 2022 and introduced a brand-new generation to the legacy of The Addams Family. The show blends genres such as Gothic horror, dark comedy, and coming-of-age to tell Wednesday’s (Jenna Ortega) story as she attends the Nevermore Academy for outcasts.
Naturally, as is the case with any other teen-oriented show, Wednesday quickly garnered a large fandom, with fans dissecting every single episode and imagining which characters could end up together. Shipping has been a major part of the conversation around Wednesday. However, while some of these ships are built on genuine romantic tension, some of them should never have seen the light of day.

Bianca and Ajax
Bianca (Joy Sunday) and Ajax’s (Georgie Farmer) in ‘Wednesday’ season 2
Image via Netflix
Bianca (Joy Sunday) and Ajax’s (Georgie Farmer) dynamic has come as a surprise to most fans, since these two characters are essentially polar opposites. However, Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 proved that Ajax is way smarter and more powerful than we give him credit for. Technically, he is a gender-bent version of the mythical Gorgon, Medusa, but you often overlook that thanks to his goofy nature. The poor guy spent most of his time in Season 2 grieving his confusing relationship with Enid (Emma Myers), but I’m so glad the writers used the opportunity to build a genuine connection between him and Bianca. Ajax’s willingness to find out what is troubling Bianca and then taking the steps to get her out of a tough spot shows a completely different side to him.
Seeing him as something other than just Enid’s boyfriend did wonders for Ajax’s character development. In the Season 2 finale, you see that he has really grown to care for Bianca when he risks his safety to rescue her mother from Principal Dort’s (Steve Buscemi) apartment. He then turns Dort to stone and prevents him from taking Bianca hostage after she exposes his scheme to everyone. However, I think these two might just be better off as friends, especially since it’s evident that Ajax is still hung up on Enid. Throwing him into another relationship immediately risks threatening his own character arc, which is finally starting to take off. Bianca also deserves time to heal and grow from the fallout of everything she and her mother have been through with MorningSong and Dort. At the end of the day, not every ship has to be romantic, and I’ll just be happy to see Ajax and Bianca’s friendship grow stronger in Season 3.

Marilyn and Tyler
Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) stand next to each other in a conservatory in Wednesday.
Image via Netflix
Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) was one of the sweetest characters on Wednesday until his Hyde reveal. However, even back in Season 1, I knew that the whole situation wasn’t entirely his fault because Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) was pulling the strings the entire time. Marilyn, or Laurel Gates, actually handpicked Tyler and tortured him to bring out his inner Hyde. Not just that, she then drugged him to ensure that he would carry out mass murder at the academy in her attempt to wipe out every outcast she could.
If that doesn’t prove that there was nothing romantic about their connection, I don’t know what does. Thornhill uses Tyler as a weapon and constantly manipulates him into doing whatever she wants. Their connection isn’t even a real partnership, let alone romantic. In Season 2, it’s evident that Tyler has really struggled with the psychological torment that Thornhill put him through, and the fact that he ultimately kills Thornhill only proves that he had nothing but immense hatred for the woman who gaslit him into thinking she was her mentor.

Enid and Bruno
Bruno (Noah B. Taylor) plays a guitar and locks eyes with Enid (Emma Myers) in Wednesday season 2.

In Season 1, we see Enid “wolf out” and finally find her pack. At the same time, she gets into a relationship with Ajax, a Gorgon student at Nevermore. Their connection was one of the sweetest parts of the show and the true definition of high-school puppy love, no pun intended. However, in Season 2, Enid was a whole new person. Sure, that came with her growing more confident in her skin, but that doesn’t necessarily have to result in a complete personality change. We all know Enid as a bubbly, but loyal girl who never gives up on the people she loves. However, in Season 2, she is consumed by a sudden, whirlwind relationship with Bruno (Noah B. Taylor), another werewolf. The biggest issue with their dynamic is the lack of any kind of build-up. One minute, you see Enid and Ajax’s relationship taking a complicated turn, and the next, you have Enid making out with Bruno.
The show tries to frame this as Enid trying to find herself, but there’s no way to deny that she is emotionally and physically cheating on Ajax in the process, since she delays breaking things off with him. Bruno is cute, but if I’m being honest, the dude has no personality. It’s like he’s just there to blow Enid’s life up and create a sense of drama, and that holds true in Wednesday Season 2, Episode 6, when Wednesday and Enid switch bodies. After Wednesday catches Bruno speaking to his secret lover on the phone, his jig is up. Enid might have bought his act, but since Wednesday speaks Tagalong, among other languages, she immediately realizes that he was only pretending to be talking to his mom. Being the good friend she is, Wednesday breaks up with Bruno while she’s in Enid’s body to spare her friend the emotional distress. This ship was failing to sail from the start, so Bruno being caught red-handed like this was the highlight of the season for me.

Wednesday and Bianca
Joy Sunday and Jenna Ortega hiding behind a rock together in Wednesday.

This is another ship that I can’t really get behind because I think it’s best left as a friendship, but I get why people can see Wednesday and Bianca as romantic partners. These two started as rivals in the show, but over time, their dynamic shifts, and they begin to respect each other. That’s obviously a great setup for the rivals-to-lovers trope. Even if you believe that Wednesday doesn’t really need a romantic partner, you can’t argue that Bianca might be one of the few characters who actually feels like a good match for her.
The siren is just as smart and stubborn as Wednesday, and isn’t afraid to call her out on her worst impulses. There’s something about these two that would make for a great power couple, because even as friends, they push each other to do their best. However, Bianca has a complicated history with Xavier (Percy Hynes White), which might lead to a weird love triangle. Ultimately, though, Wednesday and Bianca have undeniable chemistry, and the potential for it to turn into something more is definitely there, even if the show hasn’t explicitly hinted at it.

Wednesday and Xavier
Percy Hynes White and Jenna Ortega at a carnival in Wednesday.

This was the ship that everyone was talking about when Wednesday premiered back in 2022. Xavier Thorpe, a psychic student at Nevermore, was one of the main characters of Wednesday Season 1. Now, you either love this ship or you hate it. There’s no denying that Wednesday and Xavier had a difficult relationship at the start, but it has always been evident that Xavier has feelings for her. The fact that he actually goes to his former flame, Bianca, and asks her to make him forget Wednesday shows the intensity of his love for Wednesday. Not to mention their common psychic abilities, which act as another bonding moment.
However, it all feels a bit one-sided, since Xavier is the one making all these big gestures, like giving Wednesday a phone so they could stay in touch over the summer. He always seems to be pining after Wednesday, and it feels like she couldn’t care less. I admit that this ship did have potential. For example, fans believed that Season 2 would dive deeper into Xavier’s own arc and Wednesday would get to know and trust him more. However, this spark between them was extinguished before it even had the chance to start after White was removed from the show due to sexual assault allegations. Xavier was written out of Wednesday Season 2, and we’re told that he moved to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland after all the murders that went down at Nevermore.

Bianca and Lucas
Joy Sunday and Iman Marson talking inside Nevermore Academy in Wednesday.
Image via Netflix
I don’t think Bianca really needs a love interest, because it’s hard to find someone who can match her intellectual and powerful energy. I was a little surprised when she struck up a friendship with Normie Lucas Walker (Iman Marson), who also happens to be the son of the mayor of Jericho. However, I ended up enjoying their dynamic since it was a refreshing break from the world of Nevermore and all its absurdity. After spending time with Bianca, Lucas develops a willingness to cross the Outcast/Normie line, which shows his character development.
Bianca and Lucas’s scenes really showcase their chemistry. As the two teenagers spend hours doing community service, they start to see the world through each other’s eyes and grow past their prejudices. When Bianca opens up about her mom being part of the cult MorningSong to Lucas, it’s the first time she shared something so personal with anyone. This slow burn and honest connection they have was the highlight of the show for me, and I really wish Season 2 had given their relationship a real shot, even if it remained purely platonic.

Enid and Ajax
Ajax (Georgie Farmer) and Enid (Emma Myers) stand inside a taxidermy shop in Season 1 of Wednesday.
Image via Netflix
Wednesday Season 2 really did the Enjax fans dirty because of how blatantly Enid just ghosted Ajax without any explanation. In Season 1, Ajax and Enid made up the show’s most uncomplicated romance, which is definitely rare at Nevermore. These two were into each other almost instantly, and their personalities perfectly complemented each other. The way Ajax and Enid support each other at Mayor Walker’s (Tommie Earl Jenkins) funeral shows their unspoken connection. Even when Enid finally “wolfs out”, Ajax is right there by her side. Sure, like any other teenage romance, they had their fights and arguments, but the fact that they always came back to each other showed that these two really understood each other’s good and bad sides. Season 2 hits hard because Ajax really didn’t deserve how Enid eventually treats him. Instead of seeing the couple grow closer, Enid comes back from summer break as a completely different person who has decided to move on from Ajax.
The only problem is that she completely forgets to mention it to him. Many people blamed Ajax for not allowing Enid to grow, but the truth is, he was the one who really saw her before she joined the pack. The worst part is that they’re both terrible communicators. Ajax never told Enid about why he missed their first date, and Enid could barely find the courage to tell him that her feelings had changed. They could have just broken up in a mature way, or maybe even decided to stay friends. However, the fact that Enid kissed Bruno while she was still technically with Ajax ruined all chances of that. By the end of Season 2, Enid and Ajax agree to remain friends because Enid wants to take a break from dating after the whole situation with Bruno. At the same time, though, I’m still holding onto the hope that these two might find their way back to each other because they are perfect together.

Wednesday and Tyler
Jenna Ortega and Hunter Doohan lean in to kiss with string lights around them in a crypt in Wednesday.
Image via Netflix
Tyler is actually Wednesday’s only canonical love interest in the show, for whom she actually expressed some feelings. However, their romance was doomed right from the start because of Tyler’s inner Hyde. In many ways, Tyler was one of the few people Wednesday could actually be comfortable with. When she wanted to escape Nevermore, she knew she could go to Tyler for help. While their first kiss is more of an experiment for Wednesday to see if she can even like someone, you can’t deny that they share a natural chemistry that could have evolved into something beautiful. Sadly, these two crashed and burned before they could give their romance a shot. However, given that Tyler was essentially groomed to be a villain by Thornhill, don’t blame me for holding out some hope. Unfortunately, Season 2 doubles down on Tyler’s dark side as he threatens to kill Enid to get Wednesday’s attention.
It almost feels like he is obsessed with Wednesday, and not in a dark love interest kind of way. However, with Wednesday saving Tyler’s mom and Thornhill finally being dead, I do think the writers are setting up a redemption arc for Tyler. After all, Wednesday has the perfect chance to kill Tyler in the Season 2 finale when she finds him strapped to Isaac Night’s (Owen Painter) machine. However, instead of putting an end to the Hyde once and for all, Wednesday frees him of his shackles and lets him run free. No one really knows why Wednesday did that, or what it means for Tyler’s Hyde to exist without a master, but it’s evident that these two have a soft spot for each other. Tyler chooses that moment to attack his mother and spare Wednesday’s life. If you take all of this into account, an enemies-to-lovers arc would work really well for these two and give Tyler the closure he needs after everything he has been through.
2
Morticia and Gomez
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán peering around a doorway in Wednesday Season 2.
Image via Netflix
Gomez and Morticia Addams have been passionately in love in every iteration of The Addams Family. Things were no different on Wednesday, with Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Morticia and Luis Guzmán taking on the role of Gomez. Their over-the-top romance and melodrama are one of my favorite parts of the show. In the Netflix series, the couple fell in love at first sight when they met at Nevermore Academy as teenagers.
What’s so great is how unapologetic these two are about their obsession with each other, and this isn’t just for shock or comedic value. When Gomez is accused of murder, Morticia stands by his side. Similarly, when Morticia is worried about Wednesday’s rebellion, he never tries to undermine his wife’s feelings. You would imagine that their exaggerated displays of affection would eventually get old, but Gomez and Morticia are the perfect example of how you can fall in love with the same person over and over again. They might be Outcasts who laugh at the misery of others, but these two are hopelessly devoted to each other, and this has remained consistent in every version of The Addams Family, which brings a grounding element to the Netflix show.
1
Wednesday and Enid
I know the show is titled Wednesday, but Enid is just as important to the story as the titular character. When Wednesday moves into her dorm room in Season 1, you can tell that all Enid wants is a friend who understands her. While these two are polar opposites, the way they become each other’s closest confidants is actually super endearing. Sometimes, Enid’s sunshine energy is a bit too much for Wednesday’s dark personality, but I’d argue that’s the point.
The fact that both of them constantly adjust and adapt to the other’s preferences goes to show how far they are willing to go to stay in each other’s orbit. At the end of it all, they are each other’s pack. Wednesday keeps showing up for Enid, even when she doesn’t want to. In return, Enid almost gives up her life to protect Wednesday from Tyler. Their dynamic is the perfect example of how opposites attract. Plus, the end of Season 2 shows Wednesday going off with her Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) to go find Enid now that she’s fully a wolf after transforming to save her. You can’t deny that Enid is the only person who truly understands Wednesday, which is why a lovers-to-friends arc between them might be the only romantic storyline that actually makes sense in the show.
