KALAMAZOO, MI — Books-A-Million opened its third Michigan location on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 4404 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo.
The bookstore chain will celebrate a grand opening at the Kalamazoo location on Nov. 1 with games, snacks and balloon animals for guests.
The 15,000-square-foot store is open to shoppers now from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

It’s located in the University Commons strip mall next to Planet Fitness and Harbor Freight. The space previously housed Save-A-Lot.
Books-A-Million carries new releases and popular titles across all genres, from fiction and romance to cooking, science and world history.

Eye-catching covers are turned to face shoppers on the expansive shelves, said General Manager Kaitlin Thomas. Some feature a hand-written highlight from staff.
“For people that are more introverted and don’t want to ask for a book recommendation, they’re already throughout the store,” Thomas said.

The new retailer has created 35 jobs in Kalamazoo, Thomas said, and has been popular among local college students.
Shoppers can also browse music, games, puzzles, craft kits and collectables for all ages.

Encircling the sales floor are shelves of discount titles — Books-A-Million’s signature offering.
Here, shoppers can hunt for cookbooks, self-help and even bestsellers at up to 75% off, per the company’s website.

Books-A-Million will hold regular literary events, Thomas said, like Harry Potter’s birthday and book signings. Updates will be posted on social media soon.
Books-A-Million was founded in Alabama in 1917, according to the company website. It’s since grown into the second-largest book retailer in the U.S., behind only Barnes & Noble.
Kalamazoo County has one Barnes & Noble location, at 6134 S. Westnedge Ave. in Portage.
Books-A-Million operates more the 260 stores in 32 states, per the website. Stores range from 4,000 to 30,000 square feet, filled with books, magazines, collectables, toys, gifts and more.
