Pat Smith instinctively knew the foul smell he was detecting couldn’t be coming from a dead animal. He was familiar with the scent of a decaying carcass from his work as a butcher, so he suspected that the odour was more sinister.
“There was a dreadful smell coming off the island,” he told prosecuting barrister Michael O’Higgins.
