Following a very successful few summer months for Edinburgh Trams, we’re pleased that our web-based system for managing Authority to Work permits, PERMIT+, was Highly Commended at the Cloud Computing Awards for Most Innovative Cloud Product or Service.
PERMIT+ was developed by Codemakers in collaboration with Edinburgh Trams to provide an efficient and secure way for tram operators to oversee permits, which are required for contractors who are looking to work on or near the trams.
Since its 2023 launch it has processed more than 3000 permits, ensuring that our Engineering team and control room can monitor work near the tramway and ensure that safety standards are upheld.
Permit+ has made the process entirely digital, enabling applicants and our team to process and review applications faster. The website also offers transparent information about the fees attached for different kinds of permits.
Edinburgh Trams’ Authority to Work Manager, Iain MacLeod, said,
“We’re delighted that the PERMIT+ website was highly commended at the Cloud Computing Awards. The award reflects the dedication of the Codemakers team, who have worked with us since before 2023 to build an efficient system which allows contractors to work safely near the tramway, and PERMIT+ has transformed our workflow since it was put into place.
“We’d encourage anyone looking to work on or near the tramway to look at the permit requirements, so that we can continue to ensure the safety of everyone involved”.
Requests for an Authority to Work permit should be made at least 21 calendar days before works are planned to allow sufficient time to coordinate the necessary third-party permissions. If you are working within ten metres of the tramway you may need to apply for permission to Edinburgh Trams to carry out your intended works.
