The Irish Cancer Society has announced that Chief Operations Officer, Edel Shovlin, will be interim Chief Executive Officer following the departure of Averil Power.

A native of Donegal, Edel trained and worked as a Radiation Therapist in the UK, Ireland and Australia, before furthering her career in health tech in Singapore and later healthcare operations leadership in a global Oncology provider based in Australia.

After returning to Ireland in 2024, Edel joined the Irish Cancer Society to continue doing meaningful work that has a positive impact on patients and their families.

Edel Shovlin, Interim CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, said: “Taking the helm on an interim basis is an honour. We will continue doing what we do so well, helping people and their families facing cancer, every day. ”

Allan Kearns, Chair of the Irish Cancer Society, said: “Edel is an innovative and energetic operations leader and is a passionate advocate for better cancer care. The board is very grateful to her for agreeing to be interim CEO pending our final appointment, which will be announced in due course.”

Former CEO Averil Power led the charity from from January 2018 until October 2025, when she stepped down to become the CEO of Clúid.
