Aoife Dunican (aka The Stylebob), a personal and corporate consultant, joins RTÉ Radio 1 to share her tips for upgrading wardrobes for autumn. Listen back above.

“It’s all about textures and beautiful new colours,” Dunican says of autumnal wear, noting that brown, burgundy and grey will be popular colours this coming season.

Before you go running to the shops, though, the style consultant points out that – like most trends – autumn staples are cyclical. Tweeds, for example, come around every year, so make sure to shop your wardrobe before hunting down anything new.

“The fashion business is worth $2.5 trillion (globally),” she states. “They want us to keep buying clothes at a huge rate.”

When it comes to elevating what you already own, Dunican suggests playing with unexpected colours and eye-catching accessories.

“I’m a big lover of scarves because it takes wonderful colour to your face,” she insists.

This season, she says that brooches, belts, and layers of lace will refresh classic pieces, but if you want to keep things simple, she recommends adding a touch of leopard print to your all black looks.

Another way to refresh your wardrobe is to pair autumnal neutrals like brown with spring shades such as lilac and pink. You can also pair your vintage tweed jacket or cosy knit with barrel jeans and a pair of loafers to give it a more modern look.
