AD at Home is available now.
Long time readers of AD might have noticed a shift in 2016. As Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue and global chief content officer of Condé Nast, describes it, the homes and rooms that graced the glossy pages “were somehow more lived in, more human-scaled. Not everything had to be so perfectly in its place.” That perceptible swing—characterized by personality, warmth, and settled approachability—coincided with Amy Astley’s appointment as our head of editorial content.
AD at Home (Rizzoli), our new book, chronicles that journey. Spread across nearly 500 pages, the tome revisits a collection of exceptional tours published during Astley’s nearly decade-long tenure. From Marc Jacobs’s Greenwich Village town house (the first cover under her leadership) to Troye Sivan’s Melbourne home (“Troye’s knowledge, sophistication, and passion for design are beyond his years,” Astley notes in the book), the collection showcases the best of her vision for the magazine.
“This story was a full-circle moment for me,” Astley writes in AD at Home about this Connecticut hideaway’s owners, Giancarlo and Jane de Valle, the founders of Studio Valle de Valle. “I’ve known Giancarlo and Jane for years, since they were quite young. Jane and I worked together at Teen Vogue and AD, and I always felt Giancarlo was destined to be a big star.”

It’s full of creative tastemakers who flex their talents across a kaleidoscope of industries including art, music, film, fashion, and, of course, design. This includes reader favorites like Lenny Kravitz, Dakota Johnson, and more. “Fascinating people at home. This was my vision when I joined Architectural Digest,” Astley writes in the book’s editor’s letter. “Creatives of every type loomed large in my mind for an AD fizzing with ideas and inspiration on how to live now.” With never-before-published photos and behind-the-scenes insights from Astley, the book offers a deeper look into both the projects the magazine covers and AD itself. Published by Rizzoli, AD at Home is available online and in stores and includes 69 homes, with a foreword by Anna Wintour.
