Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
“Froggy knows the only person he can trust is himself!” begins soap legend John Middleton, as he joins us to discuss his latest role as Hollyoaks’ new baddie. “That’s how he survived in prison and ended up running the wing. He’s completely egocentric!”
That’s one word to describe Froggy Black – feared grandfather of gangster siblings Grace Black and Clare Devine, and patriarch of the village’s criminal clan – but in simpler terms, he’s also downright scary.
What to Read Next
Prior to Froggy, John was familiar to millions for his 21-year tenure as Ashley Thomas, Emmerdale‘s beloved vicar who sadly passed away in 2017 after a heartbreaking struggle with dementia.
The star is showing an entirely different side of himself as frightening Froggy, whose arrival in Hollyoaks promises to shake things up for a number of residents as the villain’s mysterious past is revealed.
John reveals all about his character’s past – and hints at danger, and possibly romance, in his future…

Hi, John! Froggy has history with Donny, what can you tell us about that?
“They have been closely associated in the past. When Froggy first sees Donny he’s somewhat taken aback and amused, because he knows a great deal about him.
“If Froggy were to reveal what he knew about Donny’s past it would be absolutely catastrophic for his present – and future!”
What else is in store for Froggy now he’s living in the village?
“Froggy is starting to run a dangerous gang, we’ll be meeting the members soon. He operates in his own netherworld, so is apart from the rest of the village in a way.
“He’s going to be a source of a great deal of mess, as well as trying to sort out his family, and will peripherally be caught up in the Jez storyline.”

Are there any plans for a love interest?
“I hope so, I think it’s always to the benefit of the character if there’s someone to directly play off. And it would be interesting to see who could put up with a man like Froggy!
“We know he had a wife in the past and we’ll hear more about her. It would be nice if there was some Froggy love action!”
