The search for a rock climber, missing in Baltimore, Co Cork, has been stood down following the discovery of a body.

Gardaí have confirmed that the operation for the man in his 20s was brought to an end following the discovery of his body earlier this morning.

Local divers recovered the body from the water, before it was taken to shore by the local Baltimore RNLI boat.

The body of the man, understood to be an Italian native, has also been removed from the scene, while a post-mortem will now take place.

It is believed that the man’s girlfriend raised the alarm shortly before 8.30pm yesterday evening, after the man got into difficulty while rock climbing just east of the Baltimore Beacon, in an area known as Fox’s Cliff.

It’s also understood that some of the man’s climbing gear was also found at the top of the cliffs.

The search operation began last night, and had resumed this morning for the man, involving coast guard helicopters and the lifeboats.

Valentina Coast Guard and both Shannon and Waterford-based coast guard helicopters were involved in a search since the alarm was raised for the 27-year-old. The operation was postponed last night at around 12.45am and had resumed this morning.
