The body of an elderly woman was recovered from a river in west Roscommon this morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 3:30am, after reports that a woman in her 70s had entered the water at the Demesne in Castlerea.

Her body was later recovered and taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway.

The coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.

A post-mortem examination has been arranged and the results will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
