Sydney Sweeney continues to receive rave reviews for her performance in Christy, and despite criticism of the movie’s opening weekend box office, sources exclusively tell Us Weekly the film has already recouped its costs.
Over the weekend, Christy, which features Sweeney playing the role of former professional boxer Christy Martin, opened in 2,000 theaters and earned $1.3 million.
On social media, many seemed to believe the box office was not strong. Us has learned the narrative being pushed is false and the companies behind the film have already earned their money back through international sales of the film. One insider called the film a “runaway success.” The insider pointed out that this was the movie distributor Black Bear’s first release as well.
Box office has been down across the board for films. In October, theaters saw the worst October in 27 years, excluding 2020.
Industry sources tell Us they believe the film’s box office, which they believe did not have enough “awareness,” could grow due to the glowing reviews being posted by people who saw the movie.
“Amazing movie. A totally entertaining and uplifting and moving story. Sydney Sweeney is the real deal. Don’t listen to the noise. GO!” one review read on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film has a 98% Popcornmeter.

“Sydney Sweeney was fantastic, the movie is good but she really shines more than the movie,” another person wrote about the film.
“Fantastic movie, growing up in the 80’s, I don’t really remember a lot about the story but it was very compelling,” another said. “The acting job by Sydney Sweeney and really the entire cast was top notch. I’m thinking she might get an Oscar nod for this one, seriously.”
Christy earned a B+ CinemaScore, which is an average of scores given to pollsters by people who saw the film on opening night. In comparison, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson’s new film, Die, My Love, earned a D+ Cinemascore.
Sweeney is also garnering talk of a potential Oscar nomination. She has already taken home the Spotlight Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Achievement in Acting award and will be receiving the Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
On top of all the talk about Christy, the actress, who will be returning for season three of the HBO hit show Euphoria, is “dominating streaming” with the Ron Howard-directed Eden, costarring Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, is No. 2 on Amazon Prime, and Sweeney’s 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You, costarring Glen Powell is No. 13 out of the top 15 on Hulu.
