A flight attendant has revealed many plane passengers are ignoring a set of unwritten rules that could make the journey smoother – and cleaner – for everyone on board.Â
Barbara Bacilieri, known online as ‘Barbie Bac,’ is a 29-year-old from Argentina with more than 2.7 million followers on YouTube, who often shares behind-the-scenes content from her work at 30,000 feet.Â
In a recent discussion with What’s The Jam, Bacilieri, who now lives in Spain, opened up about the biggest do’s and don’ts of air travel – most of which go completely ignored.
Bacilieri’s first rule for passengers is to keep their jokes to themselves, as she recalled: ‘There are passengers who, when they get on the plane, the first thing they do, even before saying “hello,” is make a joke.
She further noted others have gone as far as to question the pilot’s gender, revealing one person joked they would ‘get off’ the plane if they discovered a woman was in the cockpit.Â

When it comes to in-flight hygiene, Bacilieri warned passengers to be cautious when entering a plane bathroom – as the liquid on the floor may not be water.
The flight attendant added: ‘You can’t imagine everything that’s in there.’Â
Bacilieri also cautioned against walking barefoot or brushing feet against plane carpets – or blankets – as they ‘aren’t very clean.’
Regarding blankets, she said: ‘Even though the blankets are washed before each flight, they’ve been used by so many passengers that you never know what might be in there.’Â Â Â
As for snacks and drinks during the flight, Bacilieri urged passengers to be cautious about what they consume, including tap water and yoghurt.Â
She said: ‘I would never ask a flight attendant for a glass of water. They might serve me water from the airplane tap and not from a bottle of mineral water – there are tons of water bottles on the plane.’
The flight attendant added: ‘I would never eat the yogurt because they only keep it on ice bags, and they often stay out of the refrigerator for long periods of time.Â
‘And it could be that they are loaded onto the plane on the first flight in the morning and then given to passengers on the last flight at night.’

She also warned against buying tickets from a flight search engine as the airline will not be responsible for any mishaps, adding that she only buys tickets directly from the airline.Â
Passengers are also advised to always book a hotel with free cancellation in the event their flight gets delayed or cancelled.Â
Bacilieri, who never wears high heels on the job, encouraged travellers to wear practical footwear on board, noting that in the case of an evacuation, passengers would be required to remove them so they don’t damage the slide.
Finally, she added: ‘I would also never take off my seat belt. There could be turbulence without warning and I could hurt myself.’
