The Galway Silent Film Festival has revealed their full programme of events as it readies to begin its first iteration at the end of September.

Described as ‘the love child of Cinephile Paradiso and The Silent Cinema’ the festival is Ireland’s first festival dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and reimagining the art of silent cinema, with a range of events such as film screenings, workshops, and live music.

Connecting past and present, the festival aims to “offer a platform to rediscover early cinema’s legacy” while promoting local artistic talent.

While highlighting the best of silent film, the festival also aims to platform amateur filmmakers in Ireland as it includes the Silent Short Film Challenge.

Organisers said: “We invite a lively Galway community of film lovers to participate in the events, join in the discussions, showcase their work, and explore networking opportunities during the festival.”

The festival takes place from September 24 to September 27 and features a slew of venues including St Nicholas’ Church, Massimo’s Galway, The Blue Note and The Silent Cinema.

The festival will also see talks and discussions take place with figures such as silent film historian Dr Veronica Johnson who will lead a forum on the work of trailblazing filmmaker Lois Weber.
