A fisherman, aged in his 40s, has died after falling overboard on a fishing vessel off the north west coast.
The incident happened after 1pm yesterday off the coast of Árainn Mhór, within Irish territorial waters.
The man’s body was recovered from the sea by a rescue vessel a short time later and then airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A technical examination of the vessel has been carried out.
The man is not originally from Ireland, but it is understood that he had been a well-experienced fisherman who lived in Greencastle, Inishowen, for many years.
The Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority have been notified.
The coroner has been informed, and a post-mortem examination will be carried out, the results of which will determine the course of the garda investigation.
