The Republic of Ireland take on Hungary in Budapest this Sunday afternoon knowing that a win will secure a play-off spot in the qualifiers ahead of next summer’s FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Heimir HallgrÃmsson’s side still have a chance of progressing following an incredible 2-0 victory over Portugal at a packed Aviva Stadium on Thursday night.
Ahead of the crunch fixture – the final group game for both sides – the permutations are clear and it promises to be a nerve-racking afternoon for the thousands of away fans and for those watching on television at home.
For Ireland, victory will guarantee, at minimum, a play-off place next March while a draw or a defeat will end the qualifying campaign and any hopes of featuring in next summer’s tournament.
For Hungary, a draw will be enough to ensure they progress in the competition.

While the focus here will be on the Hungary v Ireland clash, Portugal will be looking to confirm their place in next summer’s World Cup when they take on Armenia at Estadio do Dragao, Porto at the same time.
Roberto Martinez’s side currently top the group and only a set of freak results would see Portugal lose out.
