People took to social media in their droves following Ireland’s famous win over Hungary on Sunday afternoon.

The Boys in Green were written off by many ahead of this month’s international break, but Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men won when they really needed to, beating Portugal 2-0 on Thursday before Sunday’s 3-2 victory in Budapest.

Troy Parrott incredibly scored all five goals in the two games, writing his name into the history books in the process. Many people had their say on social media after the game, with many stating it was up there with Ireland’s greatest ever results.

One wrote: “Wow , some performance there by Ireland. To come back twice in such an important game. Up there with the best for sure.”

Another commented: “I can’t believe it. I’ve watched more Ireland matches than I can count, been to a few tournaments, this moment has to be one of the greatest moments ever. Just when we thought it was done and dusted. @troyparrott9 had other ideas. Unbelievable!!!”

Someone else said: “That Hungary v Ireland game was one for the ages. International break at its best.”

“That is one of the greatest moments in sports I’ve ever seen,” said one other person.

Parrott was visibly emotional after the game, fighting back tears as he spoke to RTE’s Tony O’Donoghue.

He said: “I’m really, really emotional. They’re tears of joy. Ah, what a night, what a night.

“This is why we love football, because things like this can happen. Look, I love where I’m from, so this means the world to me. My family is here…

“It’s the first time I’ve cried in years as well, I really, really can’t believe it. Everyone is crying. I said against Portugal that this is what dreams are made of, but this tonight, I don’t think I’ll ever have a better night in my whole life.”
