Temperatures are set to drop below 0C this week

Ireland’s weather will take a dramatic turn next week, with the country set to be gripped by bitterly cold conditions over the coming days as temperatures plummet below freezing

Alan O’Reilly, the hobbyist meteorologist who runs the popular Carlow Weather social media pages, has warned that ‘we are going to see a big change in our weather’ next week.

The weather expert said that bitterly cold conditions will set in on Wednesday and that “it’s going to feel colder than 0C during the day”.

In a weather update shared with his followers on Saturday evening, O’Reilly said: “Thankfully, most of the rain has cleared or is clearing now after a very wet day, and sadly, some homes flooded in Wexford. Devastated to see families impacted.

“The good news at least is there’s not much rainfall to come Sunday or Monday.

“We are going to see a big change in our weather. So if we look here we can see the upper air temperature forecast and we can see those blues starting to move down so much, much colder, air moving down.

“It’s going to feel bitterly cold, especially Wednesday and Thursday. A biting northerly wind, very cold.

“Windchill won’t feel above 0C during the day even. So, it’s going to feel like it’s going to be colder than 0C by day on Wednesday and Thursday.

“It is likely start to change again on Friday with less cold air moving in and become a little bit more unsettled.

“There will be some rain on Tuesday, but the amounts will generally be low, and it will clear to sunny spells, and there will be some good sunny spells this week, but it’s a big change.

“Thankfully dryer but bitterly cold.”

According to Met Eireann’s latest forecast, while there will be an improvement in weather conditions today, the impacts of recent rainfall will continue in parts with further flooding possible in Leinster and Munster.

It start off mostly cloudy this morning with patchy rain, drizzle and mist. It will become sunnier from the north as the day goes on with just isolated showers possible. Highest temperatures of 7C to 12C are forecast, coolest in Ulster, in a light to moderate northeast breeze.

Tonight will be dry for most with long clear spells and just a chance of the odd stray shower, mainly in Ulster or north Connacht, with lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C in mostly light northerly breezes, bringing a chance of frost.

Monday will be a dry day with sunny spells for much of the day. Cloud will build from the northwest later with a little patchy rain and drizzle moving into parts of Ulster and Connacht in the evening. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in light variable breezes.

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually extend from the northwest to most areas overnight. It will be a cool night with lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C generally, though a degree or two milder in western coastal areas, with light to moderate southwest to west breezes.
