James Cameron shared a hopeful update for those waiting for a follow-up for Alita: Battle Angel. Released in 2019, the film, based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga of the same name, was a hit with audiences and ended in a cliffhanger, teasing that Alita’s battle with the sky city, Zalem, isn’t over. Six years later, the Avatar filmmaker shares a promising update, teasing fans that they’ll see more of this cyborg Motorball star.

In a recent interview with Empire, Cameron teased that progress is being made for a potential sequel, and he’s working with the film’s director, Robert Rodriguez, to make it happen. While there is a chance of a third installment, he at least wants to bring out a sequel and has appreciated fans’ loyalty.

“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans. Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”

Since its release in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel has grossed over $404 million worldwide and received a high audience score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film follows Alita (Rosa Salazar), a female cyborg with a human brain, who wakes up with no memory of her past life and is adopted by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz). Rodriguez has also commented about Alita’s potential sequel, stating that Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox made Alita‘s future uncertain.
