November brings reflection on loved ones now gone. Reading some death notices recently, I noticed how often adjectives such as “peacefully” are used to describe a person’s passing.

We yearn for a peaceful death for ourselves and those we love. Unspoken in the word “peaceful” is the acknowledgement that for some, dying can be distressing.
